What is safety glass?
Safety glass comes in different forms: tempered and laminated. Tempered glass is designed to shatter into tiny pieces rather than large shards, lessening your chance of serious injury. Laminated glass is made up of two individual panes of glass bonded together by PVB resin. This resin prevents the glass from falling apart when broken and makes it nearly impossible to break through.
How do I know if I need safety glass?
According to building codes your location requires safety glass if it is:
• In a door or within 24" of any side of a door
• Within 18" of the floor
• In or on a stairway
• Near a bathtub or shower
• Opening onto a swimming pool area that is not fenced off from the pool
Can tempered glass be cut?
No. Tempered glass is designed to shatter into tiny pieces when broken and will do so if cutting is attempted.
How can you tell if a windshield can simply be repaired or if it must be replaced?
Many windshields can be repaired, but if the damage is larger than a fifty cent piece or is in the driver’s direct line of vision, replacement is often the only alternative.
How does a windshield repair stop a crack or chip from spreading?
When a windshield gets a rock chip, air fills into the cracks. A change in temperature causes the air to expand and contract. When this happens the crack will spread. It is important to remember that although the chip will be less visible, it will not disappear completely.
How long does it take to replace a windshield?
Windshield replacement varies from vehicle to vehicle. Most replacements require about 1-1.5 hours but some may take as long as 2.5 hours. It will depend, based on the make and model of your vehicle.
