Start with Sand

And soon, you have auto glass. Or residential glass. Or commercial glass.

One item that most buildings – whether they’re homes, offices, restaurants, stores, or factories – have in common with each other and with vehicles is glass. That glass can take the form of windshields, windows, light bulbs, skylights, stairs, even walls, ceilings, or floors. If you doubt the impact of glass on architecture and design, just take a tour of the city, courtesy of the Modesto Art Museum.

“Glass is such a popular material … because it has all kinds of really useful properties,” says explainthatstuff.com. “Apart from being transparent, it's inexpensive to make, easy to shape when it's molten, reasonably resistant to heat when it's set, chemically inert (so a glass jar doesn't react with the things you put inside it), and it can be recycled any number of times.”

Making glass is relatively easy. Take some sand, soda and limestone and heat to an unbelievably high temperature until it melts. Then cool, and, you have glass. Of course, the formula varies a bit depending on what the glass is to be used for. Chemicals can be added to change the color. The thickness can be changed to make it stronger. Molten glass can be cooled very quickly to make the glass used in car and truck windshields, says explainthatstuff.
