Safety Tips for Kids, Pets | Don’s Mobile Glass

It's the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Don’s Mobile Glass offers tips to keep your children and pets safe over the weekend.

It's the first long weekend of the summer vacation season. So what do you do? Pile the kids and the dog in the car and head off on a road trip. Or take the kids and the dog to one (or more) of the many festivals and other activities in the Modesto area this weekend, like the Not Forgotten events in Manteca. Or take the kids and dog when you run to the grocery store to pick up that last minute item for the barbecue.

The idea of having everyone - kids and pets - together for some fun sounds like a good idea. And it is. But it can also turn into tragedy if your child or pet is locked in a car on a hot day. And the day doesn't have to be very hot. Care2.com notes "studies that have found temperatures can rise 20 degrees inside a car in just 10 minutes. On a reasonable 74 degree day, after 20 minutes the temperature inside a car can reach 104 degrees. Parking in the shade or cracking the windows also does little to keep cars cool, or to protect dogs from overheating."

That’s why California is considering passing a law that would allow passersby to break a window to rescue a dog that's in distress.

It's not just dogs that die in hot cars. It's also kids. But these deaths are preventable.

Parents Central offers these tips to prevent a child-related tragedy:

  • "Always look before you lock.
  • "Always check the back seats of your vehicle before your lock it and walk away.
  • "Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s car seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.
  • "If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been altered, always check to make sure your child has arrived safely."

And the American Veterinary Medical Association says it's not just heat that's a problem. Pets that are unrestrained in cars are also at risk of injury and can put the driver and passengers at risk as well. The AVMA offers these tips for pet safety:

  • "Learn more about keeping your pet safe during travel;
  • "Set a good example by leaving your pet(s) at home except when you need to have them in the vehicle;
  • "Set a good example by always properly restraining your own pet(s) while in a vehicle;
  • "Educate clients, family and friends about these issues and how they can keep their pet(s) safe."
