Wanted: An Office with a Window View

Natural light from windows or glass walls is crucial to improving productivity for office workers.

You drive past them every day and probably don’t give them a thought unless you have to go inside one. They’re office buildings and, according to the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG), they’re “the most tangible reflection of a profound change in employment patterns that has occurred over the last one hundred years. In present-day America, northern Europe, and Japan, at least 50 percent of the working population is employed in office settings as compared to 5 percent of the population at the beginning of the 20th century.”

The WBDG points out that there are several goals when designing office buildings. Among them are cost control, which includes sustainability and energy conservation, and productivity of the workforce. It’s easy to see that the design can affect the cost of the building, but perhaps less clear that the design can also influence workers’ productivity.

“While difficult to quantify, it is widely accepted that worker satisfaction and performance is increased when office workers are provided stimulating, dynamic working environments. Access to windows and view, opportunities for interaction, and control of one's immediate environment are some of the factors that contribute to improved workplace satisfaction,” according to the WBDG.

It adds, “Natural light is important to the health and psychological well-being of office workers. The design of office environments must place emphasis on providing each occupant with access to natural light and views to the outside.”

It’s clear as, well, as glass that one answer to both goals is glass. Insulated-glass walls, windows and skylights make it more cost-efficient when it comes to energy costs. They also provide the natural light and views that office workers need to amp up their job performance.

On an unrelated topic, we’d like to congratulate Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell for making it to the top of Yosemite’s El Capitan. They’re the first to do it using only their hands, feet and safety rope. An amazing accomplishment!
