Carpet Glass

You can get broken glass out of a carpet. And you can get a replacement window to fill in that gaping hole.

We’ve all been there. You’re rushing around trying to feed the kids, straighten up and get everyone out the door for school, work, whatever when - CRASH! - a glass hits the floor. It’s hard enough to make sure you get all the little glass splinters when the floor is hard. But when a glass breaks on carpet, it’s even worse because slivers can be caught in the fibers to lie in wait for a bare foot or a paw. But you can do something about it. Here are tips from sfgate.com on cleaning broken glass from carpet:

  1. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. First, pick up the large pieces.
  2. Get a one-foot long (or thereabouts) strip of duct tape. Repeatedly stick the tape to the carpet and pull it back up to get smaller pieces you can’t pick up by hand. If that piece of tape won’t pick up anymore, simply rip another piece until you get all the pieces you can.
  3. Vacuum using the hose attachment. Working in straight and diagonal paths, run the hose over the carpet from different angles to get at as many pieces as you can.
  4. Vacuum the carpet as you normally would moving in vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions. Listen for the glass pieces as they get sucked in and bounced around the vacuum. When you hear no sound of glass after several passes, you’re done.
  5. Be sure to tie shut the garbage bag in which you’ve put the broken glass and get rid of it as soon as possible to prevent someone from sticking his or her hand in and getting cut.

Here at Don’s Mobile Glass, we also recommend that you pay special attention to pet beds or dishes should any be nearby the impact zone. You might want to vacuum and launder the pet bed to make sure you get out any glass fragments. And be sure to change the water and food and wash out the bowls so your pets don’t eat any glass.
