Mirrors are an easy way to add light, space and glitz to a room.
Way back in the good ol’ days, September was the signal to start fall cleaning. That’s the process of getting your home ready for the winter and all those holidays and holiday visitors. But there’s more to preparing your home for the upcoming holidays than just a bit of heavy dusting. Fall is a good time to find ways to do a bit of home improvement. Home improvement doesn’t have to mean knocking out walls, putting on a new roof, or adding a new room. Home improvement can be done must more easily and cost effectively.
Take the bane of many homeowners – the size of your bathroom. (Or of any room, for that matter.) It’s the rare person who doesn’t dream of that luxurious, large bath. But most of us are stuck with something a lot smaller. There are ways to fix that, Texas interior designer Carla Aston says. One of her tips: Mirrors. Go big on mirrors, she says, and also use them strategically.
“Nothing makes a bathroom feel grander than a mirror that reaches to the ceiling. Trimmed out in wood or tile, a tall, expansive mirror with lighting installed on top of it, or hanging in front of it, will double the light's impact and make the space grow,” Aston says.
She adds, “One great idea is to place mirrors across from a window within the room. Doing so will make it visually seem like you have two windows in the same space! … I’ve also used mirrors in a small bathroom, from side wall to side wall, over a vanity with wallpaper used in the room. The wallpaper dies into the edge of the mirror, and that pattern then visually continues on to infinity through the mirror! You’ve just enlarged your room tenfold without moving a wall!”
Her tips, she says, apply for any room. Not just bathrooms.
