SMASH!! Tips for Picking Up Broken Glass

You don't have to crunch through broken glass for weeks after something breaks.

One of the least welcome sounds in the world is the crash and chinkle of glass breaking. It not only means you’ve lost that favorite wineglass or trinket, it also means you’re going to be finding teensy weensy little pieces of glass for weeks after. The worst part is finding those little pieces by stepping on them and having to pick them out of your foot.

But it is possible to get the glass up, cleaning experts say. The big parts are easy: You can just pick them up (use gloves and put on shoes for safety). It’s those little pieces. Here are four tips (courtesy of thekitchen.com) for getting the slivers:

  • Use a potato or any other large root veggie. Cut it in half, then press the cut halves into the glass.
  • Try a slice of bread. The size of the slice means it will have a lot of surface area to help get all the glass. And the soft surface means the shattered glass will stick to it.
  • Tape it. “This one is no surprise, but tape will pick those little glass pieces right up,” thekitchen.com says. “Use the thickest, widest tape you can find to avoid cutting yourself — packing and duct tape work really well.”
  • Wet a paper towel. “Fold a paper towel a few times, then dampen before pressing into the glass shards. Make sure it's folded thick enough that the pieces won't go through the paper.”

We here at Don’s Mobile Glass also recommend you vacuum the area several times afterward and empty the bag before you forget broken glass is inside. If you have pets with food and water dishes near the broken glass, be sure to empty the dishes, wash them out and start all over again.

Of course, if the broken glass is from a mirror or window or your car, you’re probably going to need or want to replace it. That’s the time to call Don’s Mobile Glass.
