Glass can help you turn a small bathroom into an elegant room visitors will envy.
One of the frustrating things about watching interior design shows is feeling you can’t get the same results at home. Take those beautiful spa-like bathrooms, for example. They’re gorgeous, but then you look at your bathroom and think, "Yeah, right. My bathroom is anything but spacious." Instead, it’s one of those that’s so small, it would qualify for what designer Charmean Neithart describes as the kind that makes “you feel like you have to lose 5 pounds to enter.”
But there is a solution, she says. If you’re one of those who loves the look of those seamless glass shower doors but there’s no room for the door to swing open in your bath, simply “skip the shower door. If your bathroom is about 5 feet wide, that's just enough space to squeeze in a toilet and a 30- by 60-inch tub. With tight conditions such as these, consider a glass panel instead of a glass shower door. It will keep most of the water in the shower and will free up needed elbow room,” Neithart says.
There’s also an alternate solution if you love the look of glass in your bath. Use glass tiles. As an accent. Or as an entire wall (or walls).
"Glass accent tile is really exciting right now," says Bill Wolf, owner of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen in Grand Rapids, Mich., at HGTV.com.
HGTV adds, “Used for backsplashes, shower walls and as accents on floors, glass tiles add a depth, sparkle and luminescence not found in ceramic or natural stone. With a broad color palette, and finishes ranging from glossy to flat, glass tiles can fit most design schemes. When used sparingly, vivid glass tiles can provide exciting visual highlights. Conversely, when covering an entire bathroom wall, glass tile can create a luxurious spa-like atmosphere.”
